IMPORTANT
INFORMATION REGARDING BIBLE DRILL IN LOUISIANA FOR 2012
Changes in the
New International Version (NIV)
Biblica, formerly the International Bible Society, holds the copyright for the New International Version (NIV) of the
Bible and has released a gender-neutral version of the NIV (2011). This change
by Biblica
will affect Bible Drill for those who use the NIV translation of the
Bible. Biblica will not be printing any more of the previous edition
(1984).
The concern is the gender neutrality of the new
version. State Conventions and the messengers at the 2011 Southern Baptist
Convention (SBC) have voiced serious concerns (see position paper) with this new “gender neutral” translation. A good number of Bible
Drill verses in all age groups for this upcoming cycle are affected. The Louisiana
Baptist Convention (along with some other state conventions) has chosen not to
use this new 2011 NIV translation as an option in Bible Drill. Therefore, since
the 1984 Bibles will no longer be printed, Louisiana will no longer use the NIV
as an option in Bible Drill after the upcoming drill year (2011-2012).
- We have a
2-year plan to phase out the use of NIV in our Bible Drill program.
- The year 2012 will be a
“Transition Year” where drillers may use the old NIV (1984)
- For
2012, the NIV Red Cycle (Children) and Cycle 1 (Youth and High School)
verse cards will be available in the older version (1984) of the
NIV translation
and
the NIV (1984) Bibles will be used at the 2012 District and State Drills.
Our understanding is that there is a limited supply of the NIV (1984) drill
Bibles available from biblica.com
but future printings will only be in the newest version (2011).
- In 2013 NIV
will not be used for Bible Drill in Louisiana.
We are well aware that some churches have recently
purchased NIV (1984) Bibles and they will be obsolete in 2013. We regret these
circumstances but we are at the mercy of those who own the copyright and
publish the NIV. Thank you for your understanding.
In 2013, King James and the Holman translations will
continue to be offered in Bible Drill.
